The Passing of Nick Menza Former Megadeth Drummer

The Passing of Nick Menza

Over the weekend news broke that drummer Nick Menza passed away while performing with his band Ohm at the Baked Potato in California. Menza was most widely known for his contribution to Metal’s power house, Megadeth in the 90’s. Menza’s drumming can be heard on some of Megadeth’s biggest albums including “Rust in Peace,” “Countdown to Extinction,” and “Youthanasia.”

During the early 90’s as a kid, the album “Countdown to Extinction,” was on constant repeat. I remember obsessing over Menza’s playing. Hearing of his passing brought back memories of rocking out to his drumming, pounding away on pillows with drum sticks. It isn’t until now that realization hits of what a big influence Menza had on me as a younger drummer during that time.

His monstrous clean double bass chops is something that always stuck out in my mind. As a result of that influence all I remember practicing back then was double bass drumming. I thank him for being a drumming influence early in my playing. Today, Countdown to Extinction will be on repeat. What was your favorite track performed by Menza?

Your words describe exactly how I feel Joe – Nick Menza’s impact in the drumming community was significant and his legacy will now be left to be discovered by the new generation of young drummers I am so sad that I did not have the chance to see him play live although I shall continue to drum along and listen to the songs he recorded during his time with Megadeth… Nick Menza – thank you for inspiring me and having a profound impact on my drumming career!
